The Operational Area...
The area we cover is large and diverse, encompassing inner city, farmland and open moors.
The principal centre is the city of Plymouth, situated on the southern coast of the South West Peninsula. Plymouth itself has a population in excess of 300, 000 - this figure increases dramatically during the holiday season. The city has many industries and rail links, together with a large network of roads, an airport and a busy seaport.
However, while our main area is Plymouth, we also cover as far North as Tavistock, West to Liskeard and East to Kingsbridge - an area in excess of 250 square miles - and we have even been on standby for events in Somerset. These ensure that there is no shortage of work in support of the Emergency Services
In addition, PLIMS provides cover to many rural communities in the surrounding countryside, where access is frequently difficult. To overcome this problem we use a variety of vehicles, including some four-wheel drive vehicles, which carry equipment designed to complement that of the Ambulance Service during long journeys to hospital.
