Arrival of PLIMS
The Team...

PLIMS currently comprises:
4 General Practitioners in and around Plymouth
1 Hospital Doctor
A dedicated team of administrators and fund-raisers.

Every medical member of this team has received specialist training in the emergency care of critically-ill patients. Each plays a vital role in ensuring that PLIMS continues to be a highly effective emergency resource.

PLIMS doctors provide medical back-up to the excellent paramedics and ambulance technicians of the Westcountry Ambulance Service, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We respond to approximately 200 incidents per year, the majority of which are trauma cases. We also assist in medical emergencies, psychiatric crises, midwifery emergencies and with the care of critically-ill children, and also act as Medical Incident Officers at major medical emergencies.

Enter PLIMS...

In 1991, a group of trauma-trained GP's and Accident & Emergency Consultants, inspired by Dr Tristan Evely, and with the support of Plymouth Rotary Club, decided to form a BASICS team in Plymouth.

The idea was supported by the other emergency services and so
Plymouth Immediate Medical Support was born, often shortened to
PLIMS.
Sadly, for us, Tris left Plymouth in May 2000 for pastures new in Qatar - his influence is still missed and will be for a long time yet.

Following changes to the group of doctors, and to the area covered, which now extends well beyond the boundaries of Plymouth, we have now become
Plymouth Locality Immediate Medical Support.

To perform these varied roles, PLIMS doctors carry a large range of equipment and drugs, all of which require regular replacement.......at a cost!

These include:

Ventilators
Intubation equipment
Oxygen
Pulse Oximeters
Intravenous fluids
Defibrillators
A large variety of life-saving drugs
Equipment to perform roadside emergency surgery
Splints
Rescue equipment
Diagnostic equipment
Personal Protective Equipment
